The problem with directories is that they are continually evolving.

Most directory owners start out as free to build up a good base of links, and once their pagerank goes up they switch the directory to a paid list. Sometimes these sites will still allow free listings with a reciprocal link. The key to these sites is to get your listing in while they are still free.

Unfortunately, there are also alot of deralict directory owners out there. These owners don’t realize the amount of work that goes into managing a free directory, and they quit reviewing the submitted links. These directories eventually fade off to oblivion.

The key is finding a good list of free directories that is also well maintained. I laugh when I see a list of 5,000+ free directories. These lists are loaded down with dead and dying directories, as well as, recent converts to the paid side. One word to describe these… JUNK!

I use this Free Directory List. This list is kept clean by a diligent community of link submitters. They also have an Excel list that you can save to your computer and mark it up as you go.
